Moving Violations

Traffic violations are those incidents occurring when a vehicle is not parked (moving) and are categorized as District 4 citations (Y ticket - violation of state of Illinois vehicle code which may require an appearance at court) or Compliance citations (C ticket - violation of City of Berwyn ordinance or vehicle equipment violation of the Illinois Vehicle Code that does not require an appearance at court).

District 4 Citations – Y Tickets
If you are issued a “Y” ticket which requires a court appearance, in the bottom right hand corner of the citation will be the date, time and Court Room number where your case will be heard. If this is the case, you must appear in court or a guilty conviction will be entered for this violation against your driving record. The Fourth District Courthouse is at 1500 Maybrook Drive, Maywood, Illinois, telephone number is 708-865-6040. The courthouse is one (1) block east of First Avenue, just north of the Eisenhower Expressway.

However, if in the bottom right hand corner of the Y ticket it is marked Must Mail, then follow the instructions listed on the envelope provided by the officer at the time of the stop. You can either respond by mail (as indicated on the envelope) or you can logo onto www.cookcountyclerkofcourt.org within seven (7) days from the date the citation was issued.

Compliance – C Tickets
If you are issued a “C” ticket, the fine is payable at the Records Division of the Berwyn Police Department by cash, check or money order (no credit card) Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. through 5:00 p.m. If you wish to contest a “C” ticket, you can schedule a hearing at the Parking Division at the Berwyn Police Department (Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Tuesday and Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.).

Some of the most common violations are easy to avoid and here are a few:
Not using seatbelts on all passengers
No driver’s license with you
No proof of insurance with you
Driving with driver’s license suspended or revoked
Driving without a valid license plate or renewal sticker
Obstruction of view of any window by stationary or suspended object(s)
Using an alley as a through way. It is a violation of City Ordinance for anyone to drive through an alley for the sole purpose of driving from one street to another, or for avoiding upcoming traffic control signals.
Exceeding the 25 mph speed limit on all city streets and 15 mph in alleys, unless posted otherwise.
