There are a number of reasons why your vehicle may be towed; following are some examples and information that may help you should this occur to you.
Keep in mind that if for any reason your vehicle has been towed it can only be released:
to the registered owner of the vehicle (with a picture identification),
with proof of insurance for the towed vehicle and
there must be a licensed driver present who can drive the vehicle
Towing Company
Metro Towing at 3103 South Ridgeland Avenue (immediately south of the railroad tracks on the east side of Ridgeland Avenue) is the official towing company for the Berwyn Police Department. The rates for the towing of vehicles and the daily storage fees are set by the towing company, not the Berwyn Police Department. All towing are storage fees must be paid in cash; no credit cards or checks accepted.
As of February 1, 2010 the current fees for towing and storage are:
$130 towing fee for a car
$135 towing fee for Van, SUV or Pickup truck
$135 towing fee for flatbed service
$35.00 per calendar day storage fee plus $1.00 City tax
Metro Towing hours for release of a vehicle are:
8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday
8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., Saturday
7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., Sunday
Vehicle Involved in an Accident
If you are involved in an accident and the responding Police Officer deems the vehicle is unsafe to drive due physical damage and/or if the air bags were deployed, Metra Towing will be summoned and your vehicle will be towed.
In this case, you will need to come to the Berwyn Police Department (6104 West 31st Street) and see the Desk Officer to obtain the Tow Release. After you have obtained this document, you can have your vehicle towed to the repair shop of your choice after paying any towing and storage fees.
Vehicle Impounded – Wheel Lock
If your vehicle was impounded due to a Wheel Lock (unpaid parking tickets), you must go to the Parking Division at the Berwyn Police Department and pay in full any and all unpaid parking violations and Wheel Lock fees.
Once the tickets are paid, you will receive a release form and can then proceed to Metra Towing to pick up your vehicle after paying any towing and storage fees.
Vehicle Impounded – Loud Noise Violation
If you are issued a ticket for violating the Loud Noise Ordinance, your vehicle will be immediately towed and impounded. Go to the Berwyn Police Department and the Desk Officer will provide you with the release form after you have paid the $500 impound fee. After which you can go to Metra Towing to pick up your vehicle after paying any towing and storage fees directly to them.
In addition, you will have to appear at the Local Ordinance Court (the date will be on the ticket issued to you) where you could be subject to a fine of up to $750.
Towed – Due to Arrest - Misdemeanor
If you are operating a vehicle in the City of Berwyn on a suspended or revoked license, without a valid driver’s license or proof of insurance, your are in violation of state law and subject to arrest. At that time, Metra Towing will be summoned and your vehicle will be towed.
In this case, you will need to come to the Berwyn Police Department (6104 West 31st Street) and see the Desk Officer to obtain the Tow Release. After you have obtained the release form, you can then pickup your vehicle after paying any towing and storage fees.
Towed – Due to Arrest – Misdemeanor or Felony
If you are arrested for a misdemeanor or felony while operating your vehicle, you vehicle can be towed and impounded. The release of the vehicle is determined upon the type of arrest.
Medical Emergency
If you are driving your vehicle and experience a medical emergency which results in you being transported to the hospital, it may be necessary to have your vehicle towed if there is not a licensed driver in the car with you. The responding Police Officer will try by all possible means to contact a family member to retrieve your car. If the Officer is unable to reach someone, the Police Department now has responsibility for your vehicle and can not leave it unattended and therefore it will be towed.
Your vehicle can be retrieved by obtaining the release form from the Police Department’s Desk Officer and afterwards you can pickup your vehicle after paying any towing and storage fees.
