Traffic/Parking Issues

  • What should I do if I’m involved in an accident?

    • Unless there are injuries or other emergency situation, such as fire, serious property damage, etc., that would necessitate call 9-1-1, you should call the Berwyn Police Department’s non-emergency number of 708-795-5600 and select Option 2. Give your name, location and any other information the communications operator requests.

  • How do I obtain a copy of an accident report?

    • Come into the Berwyn Police Department Monday through Friday between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. and go the Records Division window.  The fee for a copy is $10 payable in cash, check or money order.  You must be named within the police report to receive a copy and must present a picture ID.  If the incident is an open investigation, you may not be able to receive a copy.

  • What are the proper procedures to following during a traffic stop?

    • Respond to the flashing lights, and signal your intention to pull as far to the right as possible.  The officer will understand if you drive slowly looking for a suitable location.

    • Be aware that the violation may have occurred a few blocks before the traffic stop.  This delay is due to the fact that we have strict procedures to follow to ensure your safety and theirs.  They are required to give the location, vehicle and occupant description and license plate number to the communications operator.

    • Remain in the vehicle unless the officer instructs otherwise.

    • Listen to the officer and comply with the instructions given to you.  Drivers assume they’re being stopped for a routine traffic matter, but the officer may be stopping you because your vehicle is similar to one just seen leaving the scene of a crime.  Many officers have experienced verbal and physical confrontations as a result of traffic stops.  This can occur because the individual who was stopped may have warrants out for their arrest, are mentally unbalanced or simply don’t like the police officers.  Consequently, the officer may initially be acting under the assumption that you’re a safety threat.  Control over the situation can be accomplished by keeping yourself and your passengers in the vehicle with your hands clearly visible.

  • We have a traffic problem on our block, who do we contact?

    • Contact the Public Works Division at 708-749-4700 or your Alderman.  To find your alderman click here for the City of Berwyn web site

  • Is there an ordinance regarding loud noises from a vehicle?

  • What are the rules for parking for street maintenance?

    • Street maintenance/sweeping occurs year round in order to allow the City to perform maintenance duties such as tree trimming and snow removal to the curb.  There are signs on each block indicating the day of the week your side of the street is schedule.  The “No Parking” restriction remains in effect from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. of your designated day.  Click here for a complete listing of street maintenance schedule.

  • What are rules for parking during snow removal?

    • When a snow fall occurs, the City will first salt and/or plow those streets designated as snow routes, before proceeding to secondary or residential streets.

    • In order to permit City plows to clear the street as close to the curb as possible, please follow the No Parking -  Street Maintenance/Sweeping signs posted for your block.

    • Keep in mind that a snow emergency only exists if it is declared by the City of Berwyn to be a snow emergency situation.  If a snow emergency is declared by the City, a sixty (60) second wailing siren will sound between 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. and at that time, follow the signs on your block as to which side of the block you may park on.
